-How will athletes qualify for the Olympic Games?
On May 18, 2026, the official Olympic qualification period for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games began. From this date, the results of competitions included in the World Triathlon system count toward the Olympic Qualification Ranking.
-Will the qualification period last two years?
The qualification period runs from May 18, 2026, to May 18, 2028. During this time, athletes earn ranking points that determine their position in the Olympic Qualification Ranking.
-Which results will count toward the Olympic Ranking?
Each athlete's 12 best results will be included in the final Olympic Ranking.
The following limitations apply: • no more than 8 results may come from races shorter than the Olympic distance (Standard Distance); • the qualification period is divided into two halves, with a maximum of 7 results counting from each half; • the maximum possible score may be achieved under one of the following combinations:
-5 results in the first half and 7 in the second, 6 and 6, 7 and 5.
- Which competitions award Olympic qualification points?
Points can be earned at the following events:
1. World Triathlon Championship;
2. World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS);
3. Olympic Test Event;
4. World Triathlon Cup;
5. Continental Championships;
6. Continental Games.
However, no more than two Continental Championships and one Continental Games may count toward the ranking during the entire qualification period. Points from these events are awarded only to athletes from the respective continent.
How many points can be earned?
The maximum number of points awarded for 1st place is: 1250 - Championship Finals; 1000 - WTCS; 1000 - Olympic Test Event; 500 - World Triathlon Cup; 400 - Continental Championships and Continental Games.
After the winner, the number of points decreases by 7.5% for each subsequent finishing position.
What else is important?
For an athlete's results to be valid, they must:
1.successfully compete at least twice over the Standard Olympic Distance in each half of the qualification period;
2.finish within the cut-off time to receive ranking points. The cut-off time is the winner's finishing time plus 8%.
Two years of competition ahead
Olympic qualification is not about one successful race, but about consistent work over the course of two seasons. Every international competition during these two years can influence an athlete's position in the Olympic Qualification Ranking.
